| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of Hadrian facing right, rendered with the characteristic beard that distinguished his portraiture from earlier emperors and set a fashion for subsequent rulers. The effigy displays naturalistic modelling of the facial features and curled hair beneath the laurel wreath, consistent with the refined Hadrianic court style. The encircling Latin legend runs clockwise around the periphery of the flan, naming the emperor by his titles. The flan is irregular and somewhat broad, typical of Hadrianic aes coinage struck at the Rome mint during the provincial restitution series. |
