To the right stands a hippopotamus, an emblematic beast of the Nile, while below the reclining figure a crocodile is depicted partially submerged in stylised water, evoking the river's exotic fauna. The composition reflects Hadrian's celebrated journey to Egypt circa AD 130-131 and the Roman fascination with the Nile as a source of imperial prosperity. The senatorial authorisation mark S C (Senatus Consultum) flanks the central type, and the legend NILVS identifies the deity. |
