| Beschrijving keerzijde | The personification of the river Nilus reclines to the right amid a group of playful children (referring to the cubits of the Nile's annual inundation), holding a reed in one hand and a cornucopia in the other, symbolising the river's legendary fertility and abundance. To the right, a hippopotamus is depicted, sometimes shown with a child rider, surrounded by papyrus reeds native to the Nile delta. In the lower exergual area, a crocodile is shown in the water beneath the reclining figure, emphasising the exotic fauna of Egypt. The composition reflects Hadrian's celebrated visit to Egypt circa AD 130 and the Roman fascination with Nilotic imagery. The senatorial authorisation mark S C appears in the field. |
