| Reverse description | The river god Nilus reclines to the left, his mature bearded figure semi-draped, holding a tall cornucopia in his left arm and a reed in his right hand. To the left of the deity, a hippopotamus stands amid reeds, occasionally depicted with a child rider atop its back, referencing the exotic Nilotic fauna. Beneath the reclining figure, a crocodile is shown in the water, further evoking the iconography of the Nile. The reverse type belongs to Hadrian's celebrated 'Travel' or provincial series, commemorating his visit to Egypt. The legend and senatorial authority mark SC appear in the field. |
