This coin belongs to Hadrian's celebrated "Travel Series," a sustained emission celebrating the emperor's personal tours of the provinces — tours unprecedented in scale for a reigning emperor. Hispania held particular sentimental weight: Hadrian was born in Italica, a Roman colony near modern Seville, making this issue something closer to a homecoming commemoration than routine provincial flattery. The series as a whole was struck across several years, likely timed to provincial visits between 128 and 134 AD.
RIC II.3 1673 is attested in both dupondius and as denominations, the distinction often difficult to confirm when patina obscures the original surface color of the metal.
