Reverse description The personification of Clementia stands facing left in full length, draped in a long chiton and himation, extending a patera in her right hand and holding a long vertical sceptre in her left. The figure stands on a ground line with the senatorial authorization mark S C (Senatus Consultum) inscribed in the field to either side of the figure. The inscription COS III appears in the exergue, and the full titulature legend encircles the design within a beaded border.

Additional information

Clementia — imperial clemency — was not a passive virtue for Hadrian; it was a deliberate political posture. After the executions of four ex-consuls early in his reign, which he publicly blamed on Trajan's orders and for which the Senate remained skeptical, Hadrian spent years rehabilitating his reputation for mercy. This issue, struck in his third consulship, falls squarely within that campaign of image repair. The CLEMENTIA AVG legend was a direct address to senatorial anxiety, not an abstract ideal.
