This piece belongs to a remarkable series struck under Hadrian celebrating the provinces of the empire — an extensive coinage program initiated around 130 AD that coincided with his second great tour of the eastern provinces. Hadrian visited Cappadocia personally, inspecting the legions stationed there along the Parthian frontier and reorganizing the region's defenses. The provincial series as a whole is unusual in Roman imperial coinage for its sheer geographic ambition, spanning dozens of provinces and client kingdoms.
RIC II.3 1647 is among the less frequently encountered Cappadocian types from this series, partly owing to lower surviving numbers relative to the western provincial issues.
