Hadrian's extended provincial tour of 128–132 AD generated an extraordinary series of "Adventus" and "Exercitus" coinage, each issue commemorating his arrival in a specific province. The Mauretania type records his visit to the Roman provinces of Mauretania Tingitana and Mauretania Caesariensis — a journey undertaken partly to inspect frontier defenses along the increasingly restive North African border. These were not ceremonial trips; Hadrian personally reviewed troop dispositions and infrastructure, and his visits often preceded or followed direct military interventions.
The series as a whole is one of the most geographically ambitious in Roman numismatic history, covering provinces from Britain to Arabia within a single reign.
