This issue belongs to the "Adventus" series struck to commemorate Hadrian's provincial tours — the most extensive personal inspection of empire ever undertaken by a sitting emperor. His visit to Judaea around 130 AD came at a fraught moment: the province had never fully recovered from the devastation of the First Jewish War under Vespasian and Titus, and Hadrian's decision during this visit to refound Jerusalem as the Roman colony Aelia Capitolina is now understood as a proximate cause of the Bar Kokhba revolt that erupted in 132 AD.
The revolt would prove the costliest of his reign, requiring the deployment of multiple legions and effectively depopulating Judaea of its Jewish inhabitants.
