Nero's Victory coinage of this period was tied directly to the Parthian campaigns under Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo, whose successes in Armenia between 58 and 63 AD gave the emperor a genuine military triumph to advertise. The VICTORIA AVGVSTI legend on these dupondii was not rhetorical — the settlement at Rhandeia in 63 effectively ended a decade of conflict over Armenian succession, and the mint responded with sustained Victory-type production through the remainder of the reign.
Corbulo was later ordered to commit suicide by Nero in 67 AD, erasing the man while the coins commemorating his victories continued to circulate.
