Nero's SECVRITAS AVGVSTI coinage of the 60s AD was not idle propaganda — it followed the suppression of the Pisonian conspiracy in 65 AD, a senatorial plot that came alarmingly close to ending his reign. The message was pointed: the emperor's security had been tested and survived. Bronze denominations like this dupondius carried that message into everyday transactions where gold and silver never reached.
RIC I 191 is among the more frequently encountered Neronian bronzes, struck across a period when the Rome mint was producing heavily. The radiate crown, visible on dupondii to distinguish them from the as, occasionally causes misattribution among less experienced handlers.
