Nero's SECVRITAS AVGVSTI coinage appeared during a reign that grew increasingly paranoid after the Pisonian conspiracy of 65 AD — an irony the Senate would not have missed. The imagery of security and calm was deliberate propaganda, issued precisely when Nero's grip on power was becoming anything but secure. By 68 AD, with revolts spreading from Gaul under Vindex to Spain under Galba, these bronzes were still in circulation as the emperor fled Rome and took his own life.
