The Koinon of Thessaly issued this bronze under Nero during the years immediately surrounding his declaration of Greece's "freedom" at the Isthmian Games in 67 AD — a theatrical proclamation that exempted the province from direct Roman taxation, however briefly. The strategos named in the legend, Aristion, held the senior magistracy of the Thessalian league, and his name appearing on the coin reflects the koinon's retention of quasi-autonomous civic identity under the Julio-Claudians.
