| Obverse description | Confronted bare heads of Julius Caesar (left) and Octavian (Augustus, right), facing one another in the field. The jugate portrait arrangement emphasizes dynastic continuity between the deified Caesar and his adopted heir. The encircling legend IMP CAESAR DIVI F DIVI IVLI runs around the periphery, identifying Octavian as Imperator Caesar, son of the divine Caesar, and son of the divine Julius. The flan is irregular with a slightly ragged edge, typical of the provincial hammered coinage of Lugdunum in this period. |
