| Beschrijving keerzijde | The personification of Hilaritas, Joy of the Roman People, stands facing left in a graceful contrapposto pose, clad in flowing drapery and, in some variants, bare to the waist. She holds an elongated palm branch in her right hand and a cornucopia in her left, symbols of abundance and good fortune. Flanking her are two small children — one male, one female — who reach up to grasp her palm branch and the hem of her garment respectively, lending the composition a lively and intimate character. The legend is distributed across the reverse field with the senatorial authorization mark S C prominently placed in the lower portion of the field. The scene conveys Hadrian's propagandistic message of civic joy and imperial benevolence. |
