(Translation: Imperator Caesar Domitianus Augustus Germanicus, Consul Decimum. Supreme commander (Imperator), Caesar, Domitian, emperor (Augustus), conqueror of the Germans, consul for the tenth time.)
Reverse description Mars, the god of war, depicted advancing right in dynamic stride, clad in military attire with crested helmet, short tunic and pteruges. In his extended right hand he holds a spear or trophy, while over his left shoulder a small figure of Victory is borne, holding a wreath and palm branch. The senatorial authorisation mark S C (Senatus Consultum) is placed in the field to either side of the central figure, all contained within a beaded border. The composition conveys the martial ideology of Domitian's reign and his claimed victories on the Germanic frontier.
