The reverse composition is simple yet authoritative, the prominent S·C affirming senatorial sanction for the issue. The flan shows the typical irregular outline of a hammered bronze coin of the period. |

This issue belongs to a magistrate series struck under the moneyers appointed by Augustus — Lucius Naevius Surdinus, Gnaeus Piso, and Lucius Licinius — as part of his deliberate revival of the old Republican moneyer system, a calculated gesture toward traditional governance while absolute power remained firmly concentrated. The moneyers held the title III VIR AAAFFF, responsible for aes, aurum, and argentum. Agrippa, Augustus's indispensable general and son-in-law, died in 12 BC; his name on this coin is honorific, not administrative.
