Gades — modern Cádiz — held a uniquely privileged relationship with Rome, having backed Caesar and later Augustus through the civil wars. The title MVNICIPI PARENS, "parent of the municipality," was an exceptional honorific granted to Augustus by the local council, reflecting the city's deep integration into the Roman patronage network rather than mere provincial loyalty. Gades was one of the wealthiest ports in the western Mediterranean, and its civic coinage was a deliberate act of political alignment.
