This issue belongs to the series struck under the moneyers of the restored Augustan coinage system, reestablished in 23 BC when Augustus transferred control of the bronze and orichalcum coinage to the Senate — hence the S C — while retaining gold and silver for imperial authority. M. Maecilius Tullus served as one of the tresviri monetales, the three magistrates responsible for coinage production, a Republican office Augustus deliberately preserved to project constitutional continuity. The tresviri series of 7 BC is notably well-documented in RIC, though die links across the group remain incompletely catalogued.
