Hadrumetum — modern Sousse in Tunisia — was among the oldest Phoenician settlements in North Africa, and its civic coinage under Augustus reflects a municipium eager to advertise its loyalty during a period when the emperor was reorganizing provincial administration across Africa Proconsularis. These local bronze issues circulated only within the immediate region; Roman imperial coinage handled broader commerce.
The SNG Copenhagen specimens (64–65) remain the standard reference points for die comparison on this type.
