| 正面描述 | Crowned oval shield bearing the arms of Bern — a diagonal band (bend) with a walking bear in the upper field — set within an ornate laurel and palm garland. A mural crown surmounts the shield. The circular legend RESPUBLICA BERNENSIS runs along the outer border, divided on either side of the crowned arms. The overall composition is finely engraved in the late Baroque heraldic style characteristic of Swiss cantonal coinage. |

Bern struck Duplonen on civic authority alone — the city-canton functioned as an effectively sovereign oligarchic republic within the loose Swiss Confederacy, and its treasury was wealthy enough to back a gold coinage that circulated well beyond cantonal borders. The 1793 issue sits in an uneasy historical moment: within two years, French Revolutionary forces would invade, the Bernese treasury would be looted, and the independent coinage of the city effectively ended. Surviving pieces from this final period carry no visible sign of the collapse that was coming.
