Additional information

Sigismund III's early ducats from the Wilno mint fall at a politically charged moment: he had taken the Polish-Lithuanian throne only in 1587, his election contested by the Habsburg claimant Maximilian III, whose forces were defeated at Byczyna just two years before these coins were struck. The Wilno mint's output during 1590–91 was part of a broader effort to assert monetary authority across both halves of the Commonwealth, distinct from the Kraków and Poznań issues of the same years.

Kopicki distinguishes at least three die varieties across these two years — Kop. 3555 through 3557 — reflecting active die production at Wilno rather than a single consolidated run.
