Jan II Kazimierz issued this Wilno ducat during one of the most destructive stretches in the Commonwealth's history — the simultaneous wars with Muscovy, Sweden, and the Cossack Hetmanate had depopulated entire provinces and gutted the treasury. Gold coinage from Wilno in this period is genuinely scarce; the mint operated intermittently, dependent on bullion supplies that were anything but reliable in a country still recovering from the Swedish Deluge and ongoing eastern campaigns.
Kop. 3631 identifies a specific Wilno emission distinguished from contemporaneous Bydgoszcz and Poznań ducats by its die work and mint personnel. Jan Kazimierz abdicated just six years after this piece was struck.
