Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki was elected king in 1669 largely because the Polish nobility wanted a weak, pliable monarch after the exhausting wars of the previous decades — and by most accounts, they got exactly what they asked for. His reign was plagued by factional conflict so severe that a portion of the szlachta formed the Confederation of Gołąb in open opposition to him. Gdańsk, protective of its considerable minting privileges and trade autonomy, continued producing ducats under his name but largely on its own commercial terms.
Kopicki lists two varieties for this year, distinguished by minor die differences in the arrangement of the legend.
