Gelderland's duit production in the 1750s fell squarely within the chaotic final decades of the Dutch Republic's monetary system, when provincial mints operated with near-total autonomy and routinely undercut each other's standards. Gelderland was a chronic offender — its copper coinage was frequently cited by the States-General for weight inconsistencies, and complaints from Amsterdam merchants about substandard provincial duits were a recurring administrative headache throughout this period.
