Piedforts — struck at double or greater weight on specially prepared planchets — were not produced for circulation. In the Dutch provinces, they served as presentation pieces, gifts to dignitaries, or as die trials confirming the integrity of a new issue. The 1721 Gelderland ducaton piedfort exists in that tradition: a deliberate rarity from the moment of striking, never intended to pass through a single hand in trade.
Gelderland was among the more assertive of the seven provinces in maintaining its own coinage identity well into the eighteenth century, continuing the Silver Rider type long after some provinces had consolidated minting operations.
