1672 is known in Dutch history as the Rampjaar — the Disaster Year — when France, England, Münster, and Cologne simultaneously invaded the Republic. Holland was overrun to within miles of Amsterdam, and the financial strain on the province was catastrophic. Piedfort strikings of the Silver Rider ducaton were almost certainly produced as presentation or trial pieces rather than circulation issues, a practice the Dutch mints maintained for assay and gifting purposes even under wartime pressure.
At roughly double the weight of a standard ducaton, this Amsterdam piedfort represents a deliberate minting decision, not a production anomaly.
