Piedfort coins of the Spanish Netherlands were never intended for circulation — struck on double-weight planchets, they served as presentation pieces, diplomatic gifts, or assay references for mint officials verifying die quality. This example dates to the final years of Philip V's uncontested hold on Brabant, before the War of the Spanish Succession delivered the duchy to Habsburg Austria under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. The Antwerp mint produced piedfort issues in very limited numbers, and surviving examples attributable to the 1703–1705 window are correspondingly scarce.
The Delmonte suffix designation "d" signals a variant within the broader piedfort classification — distinguishing it from standard double-struck or trial pieces of the same type.
