Ulrich VII von Mont was prince-bishop of Chur from 1661 until his death in 1692, making a 1693 ducat struck in his name a posthumous issue — almost certainly produced from dies prepared before his death or continued by the chapter during the sede vacante before Ulrich Federspiel's election. The Bishopric of Chur occupied an awkward political position throughout this period, sandwiched between the Graubünden leagues and Habsburg pressure, with the bishop's temporal authority in near-constant dispute with the Reformed cantons.
Chur episcopal ducats of this type are genuinely scarce. The mint operated intermittently, and gold output was never substantial.
