James of Milly served as Grand Master of the Hospitallers from 1454 to 1461, years dominated by the aftermath of Constantinople's fall in 1453. The Ottoman conquest shattered the eastern Christian world and placed Rhodes — the Order's base — under immediate strategic threat, making the continued production of gold coinage a deliberate assertion of the Order's financial credibility to its creditors and allies in the West.
Hospitaller ducats of this period were struck in close imitation of Venetian ducats by weight and fineness, facilitating acceptance in Levantine trade networks the Order depended on for provisioning its garrison.
