Frankfurt struck coronation ducats as a matter of civic privilege — the city had served as the site of Holy Roman Emperor elections since the Golden Bull of 1356, and later as the coronation venue itself. The 1711 issue commemorates the coronation of Charles VI, who acceded following the sudden death of his brother Joseph I from smallpox. Charles was hastily recalled from the Spanish theater of the War of the Spanish Succession, where he had been pressing his own claim to the Spanish throne — a claim he effectively abandoned the moment he became Emperor.
The ¾ ducat format is uncommon; most civic coronation issues favored whole-ducat denominations or multiples.
