Reverse description Saint Gallus, the Irish-born missionary and patron of the abbey, is depicted seated facing, robed in flowing monastic vestments and bearing a nimbus, his right hand raised in blessing. A rampant bear stands to the left, referencing the hagiographic legend of the saint's encounter with the bear. The circular legend SANCTUS GALLUS ABBAS. arcs around the upper field, identifying the figure. The composition is rendered in high relief with fine detail throughout, within a milled border.
