The "Aureus Magnus" issues were privately produced fantasy pieces struck in West Germany during the 1950s and 1960s, marketed to the bullion and souvenir trade rather than issued by any monetary authority. Maria Theresa's image was a commercially safe choice — her name had carried gold credibility since the famous restrike thalers minted continuously from 1780 onward. These pieces have no governmental sanction and exist outside any official coinage program; the X# prefix in standard references reflects exactly that status.
