The "Aureus Magnus" series was a privately produced bullion and collector issue, not an official Bundesrepublik coinage — Germany's federal mint had no hand in it. These pieces were struck by a private German firm in the 1960s capitalizing on collector demand for small-denomination gold in an era when direct gold ownership was being liberalized across Western Europe. The Nefertiti subject was a reliable commercial draw following the famous bust's transfer from Cairo to Berlin's Neues Museum and the long-running Egyptian government dispute over its repatriation.
