The "Aureus Magnus" issues were privately produced gold pieces struck by the German firm Hütten- und Bergwerke Rheinhausen — not a state mint — and carry no legal tender status. Adelaide was a 10th-century queen of Italy and Holy Roman Empress, wife of Otto I, later canonized in 1097. The series was sold directly to collectors during the postwar West German economic recovery, when private gold ownership was legal but newly resumed after wartime restrictions.
