Zürich's ducats of this period circulated within a monetary system that was stubbornly resistant to the standardization efforts sweeping much of Europe — the city maintained its own weight standards and fineness specifications well into the eighteenth century, making these coins a deliberate assertion of civic independence rather than simple commerce. The .986 fineness slightly exceeds the Venetian ducat standard from which the denomination descended, a choice that gave Zürich's gold a marginal premium in international trade.
