Obverse description Central shield bearing the arms of Bern — a walking bear in pale — displayed within an elaborately scrolled baroque cartouche flanked by foliate wings or mantling. A small crown surmounts the top of the cartouche. The circular Latin legend reads BENEDICTVS·SIT·IEHOVA·DEVS·V· around the periphery, separated from the inner device by a beaded border. The overall design is characteristic of late 17th-century Swiss cantonal gold coinage, with finely engraved baroque ornamental detail.

Reverse description Five-line Latin inscription DVCAT / REIPVBLI / *CÆ* / BERNEN / *SIS* with the date 1679 in the exergue, all enclosed within a laurel and olive wreath tied at the base, the whole surrounded by a beaded border. The bold raised lettering, divided by asterisk separators, identifies the coin as a ducat of the Republic of Bern. The clean field and symmetrical wreath arrangement are characteristic of Bernese milled gold coinage of the period.
