Dorne, the southernmost of the Seven Kingdoms, was never conquered by Aegon Targaryen's dragons — it joined the realm through marriage alliance in 187 AC, a political distinction its rulers never let anyone forget. Oberyn Martell, the Red Viper, served as a champion in trial by combat before the Mountain crushed his skull in 300 AC, making this a posthumous commemorative of a man who died in the very act of seeking justice for his murdered sister.
