Yazid ibn al-Muhallab served as governor of Khurasan under the Umayyads and was among the most aggressive military commanders pushing Arab authority eastward into former Sasanian and Hephthalite territories. The Arab-Hephthalite coinage type reflects a transitional monetary system in which incoming Arab administrators retained local Hephthalite die conventions to maintain commercial continuity in regions where the population had no familiarity with — or trust in — purely Arab issues. Yazid's governorship ended badly: he was imprisoned under Caliph Sulayman's successor, led a major revolt in 720, and was killed the same year.
