The Ruteni occupied the region around modern Rodez in southern Gaul, and their silver coinage reflects prolonged contact with the Greek trading colonies of the Mediterranean coast — Massalia above all. The aquatic leaf motif places this issue within a broader regional vocabulary of La Tène decorative grammar, but the Ruteni adaptation is distinctly local rather than derivative.
The tribe submitted to Rome by 52 BC, and coinage of this type likely ceased shortly thereafter as Roman monetary supply displaced indigenous issues across the province.
