Aversbeschreibung Highly stylised Celtic head facing right, rendered in the La Tène artistic tradition with schematic, abstracted facial features. The hair is depicted as a series of bold diagonal ridges and pellet-tipped strands radiating across the field, characteristic of Boian coinage. A laurel wreath motif is indicated below the effigy. The portrait, derived from Hellenistic prototypes, has been reduced to near-geometric forms, with a prominent nose and minimal facial detail visible in relief.

Reversbeschreibung Stylised horse prancing to left in the Celtic La Tène manner, with a beaded mane rendered as a row of pellets along the arched neck and a schematically rendered body with elongated, striated limbs. A large pellet-in-annulet symbol occupies the upper right field above the horse's back, serving as a distinctive type marker for this issue. The legs of the horse are depicted with parallel linear strokes, and a single pellet appears beneath the body in the lower field. The overall composition reflects the progressive abstraction of Hellenistic equestrian reverse types as adapted by Boian Celtic die-cutters.

Zusätzliche Informationen

The Boii were expelled from Bohemia by the Germanic Marcomanni around 60–50 BC, scattering into the middle Danube basin where surviving communities continued striking debased local coinage well into the final decades before the Roman conquest of Pannonia. The Tótfalu type belongs to this late, fragmented phase of Boian production — a series distinguished from earlier Boian issues by a progressive reduction in silver content and flan weight as tribal economies destabilized under sustained military and demographic pressure.

The Kostial and Göbl references place this type within a tightly defined regional cluster, with find spots concentrated in what is now southwestern Slovakia and the Danube bend area of northern Hungary.
