| Obverse description | Diademed bust of Phraates V facing left, rendered in the Hellenistic tradition with fine portraiture detail. A star-in-crescent symbol appears before the royal effigy, serving as a dynastic badge. Behind the bust, an eagle is depicted in flight facing left, extending a wreath to crown the king — a propagandistic motif asserting divine legitimacy. The portrait is contained within a dotted border typical of Parthian silver coinage of this period. |

| Additional information |
Phraates V — known as Phraataces — ruled jointly with his mother Musa, a Italian slave-girl gifted to his father Phraates IV by Augustus. Their relationship was widely reported as incestuous by Roman sources, and the political scandal contributed directly to their eventual expulsion from Parthia. The eagle reverse on this type is an uncommon variant; the standard Phraataces drachm follows the bust-right eagle formula of his father, making deviations notable enough that Sellwood declined to assign a full catalog number.
