| Beschrijving keerzijde | A fully open rose of Rhodes with petals shown in high relief occupies the center of a recessed incuse square, the defining feature of the Rhodian plintophoric coinage. A rose bud on a short stem appears to the lower right of the main bloom. The magistrate's name ΦΙΛΩΝ is inscribed above the rose, while the ethnic abbreviation ΡΟ flanks the bloom within the incuse square, identifying the issuing city. The square border and the bold floral type are hallmarks of this late Hellenistic Rhodian emission. |

This issue falls within the catastrophic years of the First Mithridatic War, when Sulla's campaign against Mithridates VI placed Rhodes under extraordinary pressure. The island had refused to submit to Mithridates and endured a siege in 88 BC — a loyalty to Rome that came at severe economic cost. The magistrate name Philon appearing on this drachm places it squarely in that compressed window of wartime production, when the Rhodian mint was operating under conditions far from normal.
