Drachm - Philip III In the name of Alexander III, Miletus

Struck at Miletus in the immediate aftermath of Alexander's death in 323 BC, this issue belongs to the turbulent period when the Macedonian generals — the Diadochi — were still nominally ruling in the name of the joint kings, Philip III Arrhidaeus and the infant Alexander IV. Miletus had been retaken from Persian control in 334 BC and rapidly became one of the more productive mints in the western satrapy system. Coins continued under Alexander's name and types as a deliberate political fiction, projecting continuity where there was none.
