Philip III Arrhidaios was Alexander the Great's half-brother — intellectually disabled, likely as a result of childhood poisoning, and installed as king by the Macedonian infantry in 323 BC as a compromise candidate after Alexander's death left no clear heir. He never exercised real power; the diadochi used him as a figurehead while they dismembered the empire. Magnesia ad Meandrum, the Ionian mint responsible for this issue, was operating under the authority of whoever controlled western Asia Minor at any given moment during the succession wars.
Olympias had him executed in 317 BC on her return to Macedonia.
