The Akarnanian Confederacy was one of the more resilient federal states of northwestern Greece, successfully resisting Macedonian pressure and later navigating the turbulent diplomacy of the early Roman intervention in Greek affairs. Coins struck in the name of Lykourgos — almost certainly a sitting federal magistrate rather than the Spartan lawgiver — reflect the Confederacy's brief window of genuine political cohesion before Roman reorganization of Epirus and Acarnania following 167 BC effectively dissolved its independent monetary authority.
