Additional information

Kaunos, a city on the Lycian-Carian border that shifted political allegiance repeatedly throughout the Hellenistic period, gained effective autonomy following the Roman settlement of 167 BC that dismantled Rhodian control over the Lycian and Carian peraea. This coinage belongs to that window of independence — brief, contested, and ended when the region was absorbed into the province of Asia. The magistrate name Ktetos appearing on this issue is one of several known from the autonomous civic series, helping numismatists sequence the types relative to one another.
