Khusru III ruled for only a matter of months in 629, one of several claimants churned through the Sasanian throne during the catastrophic succession crisis that followed the death of Khusru II. The empire was simultaneously hemorrhaging territory to Byzantium in the west and would within a decade collapse entirely under the Arab conquests. Coinage from these ephemeral reigns was struck under conditions of extreme administrative breakdown — mint attributions for this type remain contested precisely because provincial minting authority had effectively fragmented.
