Additional information

Kamnaskires III ruled Elymais — a semi-independent kingdom tucked into the foothills of the Zagros, nominally within the Parthian sphere — during a period when Parthian authority under Mithridates II had fractured badly following that king's death in 91 BC. The joint portrait issue with Queen Anzaze is unusual enough to suggest a deliberate dynastic statement, possibly asserting legitimacy through a ruling couple at a moment when Elymaean autonomy was genuinely contested. Elymais had a long habit of striking its own silver even when Parthian overlords preferred otherwise.
