Struck at Sardes during the wars of the Diadochi — the violent succession conflict that erupted immediately after Alexander's death in 323 BC — this issue falls within the period when the Lydian mint was under the control of shifting commanders. By 319 BC, Antigonus Monophthalmus had consolidated control over much of Asia Minor, and Sardes operated under his authority while still issuing coinage in Alexander's name, a political fiction maintained across nearly all the successor factions to project legitimacy.
Price 2682 is attributed to this specific emission by die study. The Sardes mint is among the more thoroughly documented of the eastern Alexander mints, largely due to a significant hoard concentration that allowed systematic die linking.
